Biography

Charlene Vanneste (b. France) is of French Indonesian origin, specifically North Sumatran. Her bloodline leads back to the early Batak settlers from mainland Asia. In returning to Indonesia after an almost exclusively Western upbringing, Vanneste reconnected with her roots. Exploring different mediums, Vanneste’s origins guided her to adapt her hieroglyphs not only onto canvas, but also to the streets under the name Shaolen. Creating a new, fresh, and modern vibe the mysterious yet enchanting characters, which have become her signature style, can be found painted around the world in spots such as London, Paris, Istanbul, and Bali. Vanneste has exhibited in Asia and her artworks are held in private collections in Asia, London, Istanbul, France and the United States.
